New fan demands mean new delivery formats

The importance of platforms in content distribution

Fans want more advanced, faster and more frequent data than ever before. You need an army of analysts and content producers to keep your head above water. How can we deliver complex, tailored and up-to-date sports content to a global network of fans despite its ever-increasing complexity? Platforms are key to meeting this challenge, here’s why.

Platforms act as a key way to centralize and simplify processes while simultaneously adding greater depth and quality to end products.

Let’s talk about scalability first. Today’s fans have high expectations when it comes to consuming sports content, they are obsessed with their respective sports, teams and players, if you can’t provide them with crucial information such as rosters, injury details and pre-match preparations. they’ll just get it from somewhere else. Additionally, the sports experience was once limited to the period of the game itself, but in today’s ‘always on’, global social media coverage of sports demands a minimum of front-end content. match, game and post-match.

Take baseball as an example, fans want to follow their team through a game week cycle, from team announcement to post-game reactions. Major League Baseball teams play over 160 games over a 6 month period, that’s a phenomenal amount of content to create and data to manually enter in a very short window if you want to capitalize on the hype around of each game.

As technology in sports develops, so does the thirst for more advanced metrics and visualizations. Fans want to know when their favorite player hits a milestone or see a heatmap of the Man of the Match performance.

To provide this level of detail, you would need a team of researchers working around the clock and a team of designers with unlimited access to years of data. Not to mention that complicated metrics such as momentum and heatmaps cannot be created manually with precision. Sports fans were once pleased with a talking head depicting a match as it unfolded. Today’s fan demands a high level of detail, historical accuracy and high quality visualizations, the game has truly changed.

With the growing demand for more frequent and timely content, it’s easy to lose brand quality and consistency in your posts. You might win the race for fan attention, but you risk losing their respect and long-term brand loyalty. Using graphics platforms means it’s possible to capture the moments and stories that matter and communicate them to fans without compromising quality, speed or complexity.

29e In June we will host a live stream exploring how PressBox can improve your coverage; before the match, during the match and after the final whistle.
