Training and qualifying sessions are back for the 2022 NASCAR season.

NASCAR announced Friday that after nearly two seasons of little or no training or qualifying on race weekends – due to the COVID-19 pandemic – the sanctioning body will institute style qualifying KO for every Cup Series race next season.

Qualifying will also go to the Xfinity and NASCAR Camping World Truck series.

“NASCAR is delighted to resume practice and qualifying for its race weekends,” said Scott Miller, senior vice president of NASCAR competition, in a press release. “We missed seeing cars and trucks on the track all weekend, as did our fans. Below is the 2020 training and qualifying format for each of the National Series, as provided by NASCAR:

NASCAR Cup Series

Qualifying oval

  • Groups A and B will each receive 15 minutes of practice
    • Groups established in odd / even order of arrival from the previous race
  • Qualifying round 1 (Group A) – one car, one lap *
    • Transfer of the top 5 to the final round
  • Qualifying round 1 (Group B) – one car, one lap *
    • Transfer of the top 5 to the final round

  • Two 50-minute workouts

Extended practice weekends

  • Events: Daytona 500, Atlanta-1, Bristol Dirt, WWT Raceway at Gateway, Nashville, Phoenix-2
  • 50-minute stand-alone workout replaces group workouts

NASCAR Xfinity Series

NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (90 minutes)

Qualifying oval

  • 20 minute practice for all vehicles
  • Qualifications (all vehicles) – one vehicle, one lap *
