Powerful scripted formats such as Mother to game shows like To block-co-developed with Red Arrow Studios, leading Japanese media group Nippon TV has strengthened its presence in the formats industry in recent years. Shigeko Cindy Chino, Associate Managing Director for International Business Development at Nippon TV, shares with Weekly TV Formats which drives the company’s remake activities in the AsiaPac region and around the world.
TV FORMATS: What recent format agreements have you made in Asia?
CHINO: We are very proud of the Golden Eagle Cartoon TV channel of our Chinese partner Hunan TV, who meticulously produced our Pharaoh! format (the English title of the Chinese remake is Crazy Maiji) throughout these years since 2014. This is a fun physical entertainment game that takes place in different hidden rooms of traps from an ancient pattern of Chinese civilization. After airing season eight [last] year, we are now discussing which seasons to follow. Attending a tenth anniversary of the season in the near future can be a dream come true.
As well, To block, a co-development format with Red Arrow Studios, and Silent library are successful formats that have travel records from east to west and back again. To block previously aired in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia and picked up in Spain and the Netherlands and attracted more buyers in the East and West. Also, Silent library, originally from the United States (MTV) and having been broadcast in Thailand (Line TV), Mongolia (Mongol TV) and Vietnam (VTV), is once again sown in the West.
TV FORMATS: What types of formats are doing particularly well in the AsiaPac region?
CHINO: Our list of reality formats, including our legendaries Old enough!, resonates well with Asian viewers. Versions have already been released in Vietnam, China and Singapore. We will see more once the Covid-19 situation eases. Additionally, on a scripted plane, we see a demand in the realm of crime and mystery with a guessing game element where viewers can join in to guess the culprit. Guilty flag, from the creators of the successful series Your turn to kill, is an example of the perfect choice for finished tape and local adaptation.
TV FORMATS: Which territories were the best for you last year?
CHINO: Overall, Holland has borne the most fruit for us. The adaptations of Mute it! (SBS6), Sokkuri candies (NPO) and To block (NPO) have all been successful, attracting more and more attention from both East and West.
TV FORMATS: What markets are opening up? Where would you like to do more?
CHINO: France opens up opportunities for us. Be the 40th Honorable Global Adaptation Territory for our Emmy Award-winning corporate format dragon lair (M6), our scripted format Mother has also been located there and is now available on the Salto streaming platform. We are currently in active talks with our French clients on several of our unscripted and scripted formats.
